These handmade Hedgehog Houses are made to specifications recommended by hedgehog society, and these boxes are for sleeping during the day in Summer, and for hibernation in winter.
The design of the boxes include a 130mm corridor with a 90 degree bend to prevent small foxes and cats from gaining access to the sleeping chamber. They also have an air vent that extends approximately 70cm out the back to create an airflow through the prevents the build up of gasses when hibernating, and the lid has latches so you can secure the lid preventing larger predators (foxes, Badgers, dogs etc) from lifting the lid to gain access.
Although the roof is watertight we cover it with a durable roofing felt for added protection. The body and lid are built from 20mm thick larch for insulation and durability, and means it does not need to be treated (better for the Hedgehogs). We have been advised that untreated cedar on the ground should last 30 to 40 years and is sat on oak runners..
Dimensions of the box approximately 430 mm x 390mm the roof has an overhang and is approximately 580mm x 480mm.
