This bat box has been designed by leading bat researcher Colin Morris
• Research has shown that the bat box is proven with at least 7 species: Barbastelle, Leisler’s, Common pipistrelle, Soprano pipistrelle, Brown long-eared, Natterer’s and Whiskered (confirmed) and possibly Brandt’s.
• Comparative trials show excellent performance and occupancy rates
• 3 vertical chambers with varying size options for different species & different temperature zones
• Rough saw untreated larch is used so that the bats can land and climb on all internal surfaces
• We use Brittish larch for 2 reasons. 1 it lasts giving the box in the region of 40 to 50 year life. 2 it comes from treas grown in the north of England and Scottish borders so has low carbon footprint.
• Reduced cleaning requirements as dropping fall to the ground
• Dark roof / front elevation to absorb heat. Rather than using plastic or painting it black we use reclaimed welsh slate.
The slot bat box was designed to imitate niches where crevice dwelling bats might roost; such as a split in a tree trunk or behind loose bark. The three vertical ‘slots’ each of a different width, offers a choice that several species of bat, depending on their size, might use. The upper section of the two partition walls have been cut away to allow bats an area to cluster, conserve energy and breed.
